MEASUREMENT GUIDE
How to measure an influencer campaign
A report with large view numbers can still offer little decision value. Good measurement starts before launch—with a clear hypothesis, a primary objective and a plan for using the signals.
In short
In short
Measure influencer campaign effectiveness by matching KPIs to the objective: exposure and unique reach for awareness, watch time and engagement for interest, clicks and conversions for action, and total cost per relevant outcome for efficiency. Report variation between creators, concepts and videos—not only totals.
Choose one primary objective before the KPIs
Campaigns can influence several stages, but the team needs one primary objective for decisions. “Maximum engagement and sales” is not clear if it does not say which wins when signals conflict.
Write a hypothesis: For [audience], [creator/concept/message] will create [change], measured by [primary KPI] within [period]. The report then becomes a test rather than a recap.
KPIs by the job the campaign must do
| Objective | Primary signals | Secondary signals |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Unique reach, qualified views | Frequency, cost per thousand |
| Interest | Watch time, completion rate | Saves, shares, relevant comments |
| Traffic | Qualified clicks, landing-page visits | Click rate, cost per visit |
| Conversion | Purchase, lead, registration | Conversion rate, cost per outcome |
| Content production | Usable/approved deliveries | Delivery time, revisions, cost per version |
Build tracking for the decision
- Use clear UTM parameters by campaign and, where useful, by creator or concept.
- Use unique codes where they add value, but remember they do not capture all influence.
- Define attribution windows before seeing results.
- Record platform data at the same point for every delivery.
- Document media spend and boosting separately.
- Connect landing-page and conversion data where consent and privacy rules allow.
Compare like with like
A large creator posting on day one and a small creator posting late have different time, distribution and audience. Use a fixed measurement window and show both absolute numbers and relevant rates.
Do not rank on one metric. High views can coexist with low watch time, while high engagement rate can come from a tiny audience. Assess the sequence: was it seen, did it hold attention and did it support the intended action?
Report what worked, not only who
Creator names are difficult to turn into repeatable strategy. Tag content by hook, message, format, length, product use, setting and CTA. Then find patterns across creators and feed them into the next brief.
Separate correlation from causation. A hook appearing among winners did not necessarily cause the result; turn the pattern into a hypothesis for the next controlled test.
Calculate efficiency with the full cost
Cost per outcome should include relevant creator fees, production, rights, platform or operational cost and paid distribution. You may show media efficiency and total campaign efficiency separately, but label them clearly.
For content programmes, measure usable deliveries, permitted usage period and internal time. This makes productivity gains visible.
A report that leads to a decision
- Objective, hypothesis and measurement period
- Scope: creators, videos, channels, cost and status
- Primary KPI with comparison point
- Distribution, not just average
- Strongest and weakest creative patterns
- Data limitations and what cannot be concluded
- Three changes for the next brief
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate?
There is no universal good rate across channels, formats, audience sizes and markets. Compare with the creator’s own history and relevant deliveries in the same measurement window.
How do you measure influencer marketing ROI?
Define the economic value the campaign should affect, apply an agreed attribution method and compare that value with full campaign cost. If sales cannot be isolated, report measurable contributions without calling them direct ROI.
Are views enough?
No. Views show distribution, not necessarily attention, understanding or action. Combine them with watch time, response and objective-linked outcomes.
